Starke County Youth Club Runner-Up for Purdue Award
Recently, the Starke County Youth Club was chosen as a runner up in the seventh annual Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award, sponsored by Purdue University's College of Consumer and Family Sciences. Dean Dennis Savaiano announced the awards. They honor organizations that have a direct impact on the community and improve the lives of families.
“We are thrilled to receive this honor from Purdue,” says Melissa Smith, Site Coordinator, “I want to thank all of our area friends who have participated. Business donations, guest speakers, and organizations’ volunteers have helped us make a huge impact both in our families and schools. They have created a real sense of community.”
The Starke County Youth Club Inc. addresses the needs of the community's children, many of whom live in poverty. The club's after-school program offers hands-on centers to improve math, science and literacy skills and provides homework assistance and family support.
“This award is recognition of the hard work and partnership that exists every day at Club. Great relationships grow at SCYC between our students, their families and the larger community.” shared Executive Director, Irene Szakonyi. “We’re very excited by our selection and are looking forward to a terrific program year.”
The Starke County Youth Club Inc. will receive a certificate and a $500 cash award on August 26th, 2008.
Registration for SCYC is closed. Any family interested in participating in the after-school program during the 08-09 program year can be placed on the waiting list. Entrance into the program may be significantly delayed.
You can download our annual calendars. Please pay special attention to changes in program dates and times. All SCYC sites begin on August 18 this year. No transportation is available.
